Description

“We are already one. But we imagine that we are not. And what we have to recover is our original unity.” — Thomas Merton

Join us for an immersive workshop exploring the contemplative wisdom and prophetic spirit of Thomas Merton—a Trappist monk, mystic, social critic, and pioneer of interfaith dialogue.

Guided by Leslie Hershberger and Adam Clark, this 4 hour experience will weave together insightful teachings, soulful practices, and heartfelt dialogue to explore Merton’s vision of the True Self, the hidden unity within us all, and a faith that thrives in both profound silence and bold public engagement.

In a time marked by distraction, division, and a yearning for spiritual depth, Merton’s life extends a compelling invitation: to embrace contemplation not as an escape from the world, but as a transformative way of living within it. Together, we will uncover:

  • The pivotal moments that forged Merton’s spiritual journey

  • Contemplation as a 3 centered practice of shifting from mental center ideas about the divine to sinking into the heart of experience.

  • Contemplation-in-action as the capacity to take skillful and appropriate action in the world fractured by fear, desire and injustice.

  • The mediating relationship between the false self, the true Self and the heart.

  • Merton’s incisive critique of culture and his summons to social action

  • How a contemplative life nurtures compassion, clarity, courage and a restoration to wholeness in a fragmented world.

This will be a sacred space for soulful connection, 3 centered practice, enriching lessons, and communal dialogue. No prior knowledge of Merton or contemplation is required—only an open heart and a curious spirit are welcome.

There will be a 30 minute lunch break, participants encouraged to bring lunch.
