Enneagram Salons: An Overview
People learning the Enneagram often reduce it to a description in a book, a meme, or stereotype. There is a profound difference between studying the Enneagram and encountering it in living form. If we are to carry the Enneagram forward in a responsible, integrative way, we must invite people into their own interiors—to develop the capacity to observe themselves with clarity and honesty. And we must invite them into experiences of listening to others—to hear, from the inside, how different types move through the world.
Through the Narrative Tradition’s skillful, relational inquiry method, we enter a field of living conversation—one where each type speaks from its interior landscape, revealing its struggles, adaptive strategies, strengths, and unique path of development: Enneagram Salons.
Learning the Enneagram through the INNER life of another is not a mental construct confined to the head—where we reduce people to a type from the OUTSIDE in. It is an unfolding across all three Centers: Head, Heart, and Body. You don’t simply understand the types cognitively. Rather, you feel them, recognize them and locate yourself within them.
The learning becomes embodied, relational, and real.
Enneagram Salon: The Patterns We Don't See
Most of us have a version of ourselves we're unconsciously committed to. Maybe it's the one who's always helpful, always competent, always okay.
One woman I worked with realized in her 50s that she'd spent decades being "the strong one." This idealized self had a shadow side: she couldn't let anyone (including herself) feel her avoidances: her grief, vulnerability and her tenderness. She genuinely didn't know her type pattern was organized around avoiding them as her core defense mechanism was denial. Her strength had real value to herself and others. Yet it was often overused, protecting her from what she was conditioned not to feel.
This is the territory of our next Enneagram Salon: the core patterns that run beneath each Enneagram type.
Together we'll explore:
the idealized self — the pattern that supplies us with an identity
our avoidances — the blindspot each type is conditioned not to see or feel
the defense mechanism — the "glue" that holds the whole structure in place
These aren't flaws to be critiqued. They're powerful strategies that once gave us a sense of safety, connection, and control.
Spiritual freedom begins as we shine the light of awareness on these core patterns: shifting from automatic to receptive awareness, where we see things as they actually are, with compassion.
We'll spend a full morning together, moving between a framing overview, dyad conversations where you can explore your own patterns with a partner, and group dialogue where the wisdom of the community comes into the room.
Knowing your type before attending is helpful, but it isn't required. A willingness to be curious about yourself is the main prerequisite.
Come as you are. We'll explore our patterns together.
Intention of the Hive
When you join a Hive experience, you're invited into our intention to create a group experience that's inclusive, rooted in mindfulness, and dynamically relational. We aspire for each Hive experience to model these intentions, and even to refine them as we continue to learn how to gather in a way that's transformative! The embodiment of these intentions by Hive facilitators, Members, and class participants is what makes the Hive the unique and healing social container that many experience it to be.
