Description
When we’re present, open, and connected to ourselves and the world around us, we can act and relate in ways that align with our values—but under pressure, conflict, or complexity, it becomes harder to return to that grounded awareness. Instead, we often fall into default behaviors shaped by past experiences and the systems we’ve lived in; responses that once kept us safe can now limit our ability to lead, connect, or choose wisely. These learned, automatic reactions can freeze us, pull us off course, or narrow our options, becoming obstacles to showing up in the ways we truly intend.
During this five-week course, participants will learn more about how they respond to pressure. Through somatic practices, we will explore the default emotions, moods, sensations, actions and language that show up when we are leading. We will examine with compassion how our bodies are taking care of us. We will also practice disrupting the patterns that no longer serve us, and explore how all of this occurs in the context of being in a group.
Part 1: Exploring Center
Centering is a practice of becoming open, present and connected to our sensations, our emotions and our environment. It is an opportunity to organize around what matters most: people, values, outcomes. Participants will begin to cultivate a practice and understanding of what center feels like.
Part 2: The Body Under Pressure
Learn how the body responds under different pressures. Why is this happening? How has the body been taking care of itself? Participants will practice recognizing when the body is off center, and noticing how this shifts the dynamic in a room full of others under pressure.
Part 3: Practicing the Return
How can we return to the state of center while remaining attuned to what is happening around us? Explore how the body can become present, open and connected for the sake of taking action that is choiceful rather than reactive. These practices will allow participants to feel how to do this while still sensing what is happening around them.
This course is for you if…
You desire greater somatic awareness, or the ability to identify sensations and emotions and make meaning of them.
You want your actions and relationships to embody and reflect what you care about most.
You are longing to step into leadership with greater self-awareness and skill for disrupting patterns under pressure that don't serve you.
You are eager to grow your capacity to sense and feel current group dynamics for the sake of facilitating and leading the community into action.
This class will involve some content sharing by the facilitator, individual reflection, and large-group and small-group discussion.
Intention of the Hive
When you join a Hive experience, you're invited into our intention to create a group experience that's inclusive, rooted in mindfulness, and dynamically relational. We aspire for each Hive experience to model these intentions, and even to refine them as we continue to learn how to gather in a way that's transformative! The embodiment of these intentions by Hive facilitators, Members, and class participants is what makes the Hive the unique and healing social container that many experience it to be. More About the Facilitators
Sarah Corlett
has spent over 20 years helping communities and institutions move through complex social change, working as an organizer, facilitator, and consultant. She has designed and led curricula and programs that translate big, hard problems into work people can actually do together, and she brings that same rigor to her practice as a somatic coach. Where traditional coaching stays in the head, Sarah works with the body, helping clients understand how their patterns, and the systems they've lived inside, are held physically, and how the body becomes a tool for real, lasting change.
Sarah is a certified somatic coach through the Strozzi Institute.
